tourtelotte mill, south of torry road

Waterway: Clough's Brook
Water power: Overshot wheel
Mill type: Silk Mill
Water power: Overshot wheel
Mill type: Silk Mill
History: Little history was available for the site but it was constructed circa 1800 as a silk mill it was later used as a machine and wagon wheel shop.
Site Characteristics: The site was unusual in that the mill was located about 800 feet from the dam. A 400 foot on-stream dam creating a 2 acre pond was constructed across Clough’s Brook. The dam had a center gate for controlling the water level and a head race on the west end of the dam. An excavated sluiceway or head race carried water the 800 feet from the dam to the mill to an overshot wheel. The ten feet head at the dam was increased to approximately a 20 foot head at the mill site. This was more than enough to turn a n overshot wheel.
