Mill type: Saw mill
Water power: Overshot wheel/turbine
Mill type: Saw mill
History: Little historical information exists on the mill although several clues exist that offer explanations as to how it operated. It is clear that a mill was located in this location in 1869 but another mill may have operated at this site as early as 1781 and as Brown’s Mill as Brown had occupied the property before Eldredge. Brown was known to have had a mill in this area or on the Fenton River during this time period. At this writing, additional information has been located. It will be added when verified.
Site Characteristics: The mill remnants of a saw mill are located along the north easterly side of brook on the westerly side of Clint Eldredge Road. The dam still functions with the pond retaining much of its original shape, but the upper area of the pond is showing signs of eutrophication. The remnants of the mill building and evidence of a race, wheel pit, and tail race still exist.
An on-site inspection revealed that an 11 foot head could have supported an overshot water wheel for power supporting reports that one was used there originally. Closer inspection revealed a curved pit common for supporting a horizontal turbine which was likely a second generation source of power.
