Water power: Overshot wheel
Mill type: Saw mill
History: Little information was found on this site except that an old saw mill was located on this site. There is some speculation that a mill on this site may have existed as early as the late 1700s. Two notes in Willington’s history are indicative of possibly a Vinton mill site there. In 1781, the Town “Voted to give Liberty to Mr. David Vinton to erect a Dam and Build a Sawmill on sd Vinton’s Land ….” Both Seth and David Vinton had property in the area as in other parts of town including the East Willington of Hollow area of town.
No direct connection could be made between the saw mill site and owner or the Vinton’s saw mill site noted above. At this writing, additional information has been located. It will be added when verified.
Site Characteristics: The mill site was located on Eldredge Brook where it crosses Route 320. It was located in a deep cut just easterly of Route 320. Little descriptive information was found for the site except that an old dam was westerly of Route 320 and an old saw mill had been located easterly of 320. Remnants remain today of a small mill building. The site could have easily supported an overshot wheel.
