Bone Mill, Plains Road, Tolland

PictureBone Mill, Upper Dam
Waterway: Bone Mill Brook

Water power: Most likely an overshot wheel turbine

Mill type: Bone Mill

History: The mill was located at the base of the lower of three dams on Bone Mill Brook. The mill was a single purpose mill used in the 1800s to grind animal bones into fertilizer. Three dams were used to provide enough water in storage to power the mill. The most northerly dam was located just northerly of the town line in Ellington and the lower two dams were located in Tolland. Little evidence remains of the mill site, the old abandoned Bone Mill Road, and the middle dam site.

Site Characteristics: Other than evidence of the three dams, the site has deteriorated so little operational evidence could be found. While evidence of the remnants of the upper and lower dams is easily recognized, the middle dam sites is so extensively deteriorated that it can only be recognized by the trained eye. There is no public access to the site.
